10 years of marriage / 10 things that made it work

Vintage typewriter surrounded by floating fragments in a dark, red-tinged environment.

You'll do more home loans when you do more at home.

‍

Nobody ever had a record month while their marriage was quietly falling apart in the other room.

‍

Your business runs on your energy, and your energy comes from home.

‍

My success in business has always come from knowing the right activities to do.

‍

“Know activity, know business. No activity, no business.”

‍

Simple, right?

‍

Well, what about the activities to keep my marriage booming?

‍

Here’s what my wife and I have focused on the past 10 years of a strong marriage (we have picked up many of these from other successful couples, marriage experts, and a whole lot of trial and error in my own house).

‍

15 Minutes, No Devices

‍

Fifteen minutes a day. Phones face down, TV off. Early morning coffee works best, before the world gets a vote on your attention.

‍

Walk 'n Talks

‍

Walks with my wife improve my life. Side by side beats face to face. Something about not making eye contact makes it easier to say the real thing.

‍

Date Nights Avoid Fight Nights

‍

It doesn't have to be dinner. A lunch date, a walk, a shared hobby, even running errands together. No kids, no phones. That's the whole rule.

‍

Pillow Presents

‍

Small surprises left on the pillow. A card, a snack, a note. Costs three dollars, buys you three days.

‍

Staycations and Vacations

‍

Game changer. Put one on the calendar every 90 days. If it isn't scheduled, it isn't happening.

‍

Grocery Store Flowers

‍

No occasion required. Grab a second bunch for your daughters while you're at it. You're setting the standard for how they expect to be treated.

‍

Pray Together

‍

If faith is part of your life, make it a shared habit and not a solo one.

‍

Work Out Together

‍

Doesn't have to be the same workout. Try hers, let her try yours. Suffering together counts as quality time.

‍

Read a Book Together

‍

She picks one, then you pick one. It sparks conversations you'd never have otherwise. (My wife tried to pick Britney Spears' memoir last month.)

‍

Love Languages

‍

Know hers and practice it daily. Daily deposits build long-term relationship wealth.

‍

Cheers to another 10 years with my best friend from Italy.
