Nobody talks about September 12th

Everyone remembers September 11th.

‍

But nobody talks about September 12th.

‍

I was 20 years old, and I remember waking up that Wednesday morning to a country that felt completely different than the one I'd gone to bed in the night before.

‍

Nothing looked different where I was in Chicago, but everything felt different.

‍

The commute was quieter. 

‍

People weren't cutting each other off. 

‍

Everyone and everything felt kinder. 

‍

I was in College at the time (short stint, didn’t graduate).

‍

We just sat around and talked. 

‍

About our families, the news, how our parents were doing.

‍

The Professor didn’t even talk about the curriculum. 

‍

For that one day, everyone remembered that we were all just people.

‍

Then September 13th came. And 14th. And 15th.

‍

And slowly, without anyone noticing, we all went back.

‍

Back to our old perspectives. 

‍

The unity didn't leave because we ran out of it.

‍

It left because we stopped choosing it.

‍

That's the part I've thought about most over the years.

‍

We had it. All of us. 

‍

Every single person in this country had it for about 72 hours. 

‍

Not because we were forced to, but because for a brief moment, we remembered what actually mattered.

‍

The people around you are the same people they were on September 12th.

‍

The kindness is still there, and so is the patience and the willingness to actually see each other.

‍

We just stopped choosing it.

‍

But you don't need a tragedy to bring it back, you just have to decide today.

‍

Wave at your neighbor. 

‍

Let someone merge. 

‍

Ask the cashier how his or her day is going. 

Call the person who's been on your mind. 

‍

Say thank you to someone who never gets thanked.

‍

That's what September 12th taught me.

‍

The best version of us is always available. 

‍

We just have to stop waiting for a reason to show up as it.

‍
