The 5 Loan Officer Love Languages

Happy Valentine's Day.
I know, I know.
You're probably thinking: "Amir, I'm a Loan Officer, and you are not a greeting card company."
Fair.
But here's the thing:
The best LOs in this business aren't just good at mortgages.
They're masters at making people feel valued.
“Everyone has an invisible sign hanging from their neck, ‘Make me feel important.’ Never forget this message when working with people.” - Mary Kay Ash
Gosh, she is so right.
No wonder Mary Kay, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, had a net worth of $100M when she passed in 2001.
And that's exactly what love languages are about.
You might remember that this whole “love languages” concept came from the book “The 5 Love Languages” by Gary Chapman.
I highly recommend all couples read this book.
Chapman reveals how all of us have a primary emotional language -- a specific way we prefer to give and receive appreciation.
Some people feel valued through words.
Some through time.
Some through gifts.
Some through acts of service.
Some through physical touch.
I have always wondered how this pertains to ALL relationships…
Even professional ones.
So I came up with the 5 Loan Officer Love Languages -- the specific ways you show leads, prospects, customers, clients, and referral partners that you genuinely care about them.
Because here's the truth:
People don't refer you because you have competitive rates (this is certainly important, though)...
They refer you because of how you make them FEEL.
So let's break down the 5 Love Languages every elite LO needs to master:
Love Language #1: Words of Affirmation
Say the things other people are thinking but not saying.
Most Loan Officers are terrible at this.
They'll close a loan, say "thanks for your business," and disappear.
But top performers?
They send specific, genuine affirmation.
Examples:
To a client after closing:
"I just want you to know -- buying your first home is a big deal, and you handled every step with so much patience and trust. That made my job easy, and I'm genuinely excited for this next chapter for you."
To a Realtor after a tough deal:
"That deal was a nightmare, and you stayed calm, communicated beautifully with your buyer, and kept everything moving. That's why you're one of the best I work with."
The Move:
Send one specific, heartfelt affirmation to someone this week.
Be specific and sincere!
Tell them EXACTLY what you appreciate about them.
Love Language #2: Quality Time
Years ago, I asked every single Realtor partner of mine this question:
“What is something that is really important for you in our relationship? I want to make sure you feel supported by me.”
Some of the answers blew my mind.
One of them said:
“It’s really important to me that my lender partner support my charity by attending our events and supporting the cause with me.”
I dug deeper into why that charity was important to her.
Part of me felt ashamed that I hadn’t discovered that earlier in our relationship.
So, I attended every event with her from then on.
The time I invested in her paid off 10x financially, but more importantly, it blessed me because the charity she cared so deeply about opened my eyes to a need in our own community.
Get attuned to your people.
This is the language most LOs ignore.
They think every interaction is business-related.
But real relationships are built in the margins -- the moments that don't "count."
Examples:
- Double date with your best Realtors, this is a game changer.
- Have fun outings with each of your respective teams. If you don’t have any LOAs yet, ask if you could hang out with them and their team.
- Set up a fun activity. For years, one of my best Realtor partners and I would have a Taco Tuesday monthly. He’d pick a spot one month, and I’d pick a spot the next. We would NEVER talk business.
The Move:
This week, schedule one meeting with someone where the ONLY goal is to connect.
No pitch. No ask. Just quality time.
Love Language #3: Acts of Service
Do the thing they didn't ask you to do.
This is my personal favorite.
Because it separates the vendors from the partners.
Examples:
- A Realtor mentions their buyer is stressed about moving costs → you send them a list of 3 affordable local movers
- A past client mentions they need a handyman → you intro them to someone you trust
- A Financial Advisor is struggling to explain PMI to a client → you send them a quick video breakdown they can forward
The Move:
Listen for problems this week.
Then solve one WITHOUT being asked.
That is the WOW effect.
Love Language #4: Gifts
Send something unexpected that shows you were paying attention.
I'm not talking about closing gifts (everyone does those, and frankly, I don’t believe in closing gifts).
I'm talking about the spontaneous, thoughtful gestures that make people stop and say: "Wow, they were actually listening."
Examples:
- A client mentions they're training for a marathon → you send them some running gels with a handwritten note
- A Realtor mentions their kid just made the basketball team → you send a Starbucks gift card with "Congrats to the future NBA star."
- A past client mentions they just adopted a dog → you send a dog toy with "Welcome to the family!"
The Move:
- Keep a notes file on your phone.
- Every time someone mentions something personal, write it down.
- Then act on it within 7 days.
Love Language #5: Physical Touch
Not literally lol, just show up in person.
I know that sounds weird in a business context, but hear me out.
In a world of texts, emails, and Zoom calls, SHOWING UP physically is a love language.
Examples:
- Hand-delivering a preapproval letter to a Realtor's office instead of emailing it
- Showing up to a client's closing in person (even when you don't have to)
- Popping by a Realtor's open house for 10 minutes just to say hi
The Move:
Once a week, do something IN PERSON that you could've done digitally.
The effort is the message.
And here's why this matters today (and every day):
People won't remember your interest rate.
They won't remember your turn time.
They WILL remember how you made them feel.
And the Loan Officers who master these 5 love languages?
They're the ones who:
- Get referrals without asking
- Build partnerships that last decades
- Never have to "hustle" for business because people are already thinking of them
I encourage you to pick at least ONE love language from the list above.
Use it with ONE person next week.
The best relationships in this business aren't built on transactions.
They're built on moments like this.
Happy Valentine's Day.
Now go make someone feel valued.
PS: my personal love language is words of affirmation, so next time you see me, just pay me a compliment, and I’ll run through a wall for you. ;)
