The Best Business is a Boring Business

“Once you get fancy, fancy breaks down.” -Morgan Spurlock

I used to be this guy:

15-page business plans (now it’s my simple ONE-page 2x5 Business Plan).

60-minute Initial Loan Consultations with candlestick charts (cringe).

And I would also:

Overthink everything.

Over-explain everything.

Overcomplicate everything.

The minute I started to simplify everything, the less stressed I made myself AND everyone around me.

I simplified our new lead onboarding process.

I simplified and standardized our client retention process (Focus 50 Client “Hall of Fame” list, send four a nice gift every month)

I simplified our gifting program (no more closing gifts, only home anniversary and “spontaneous” milestone gifts)

I simplified my time blocking (social selling for 30 minutes, phone selling for 60 minutes, and face-to-face selling for 120 minutes)

I simplified how I trained others (share a win, review progress, ask me a question)

I simplified how I asked for business (“Do you have any reservations in referring me your next buyer?” then I sit on my hands)

If you were to shadow me today, you might be surprised by what you would witness.

My days are not that “exciting,” but highly productive.

Actually, the more boring my days, the more booming my business.

I became very clear on what my highest priorities are, both personally and professionally, and say the word “no” to everything that doesn’t align.

I personally call a tight list of Financial Advisors on specific time-blocked days (to add value and to ask for business).

I personally call a tight list of Realtors on specific time-blocked days (to add value and to ask for business).

I personally call all customers and clients (there is a difference) that closed on their home loan the past week on specific time block days (to genuinely thank them, ask for feedback and yep, you guessed it:

Future frame their next transaction with me.

I have lunch with someone at 1pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: typically at the same place where it’s close to my home, parking is easy, food is neutral and inexpensive, the environment is chill and I’m mentally confident as I have “home court advantage.”

My loan consultations are blocked from 2:30PM to 5PM every afternoon except for Fridays (high cancellation rate).

If a new Realtor wants to meet with me during my Thursday morning phone selling time block, I say “unfortunately, I’ve committed that time every Thursday to call every recently transacted homeowner to thank them and to see how I can get my Realtor a referral from them.”

I am locked in.

I get in, make an impact, and get out.

I got out of my own way, and started to work the basics in basic ways with anything BUT basic results.

This is why I launched a National Loan Officer Coaching company where I share with you all of the above, plus much more… step-by-step.
